Taiwan has urged Japan and the Philippines to ensure that their negotiations over maritime boundaries and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) do not infringe upon Taiwan’s rights and interests in the surrounding waters. This appeal comes after Japan and the Philippines announced their intention to start talks aimed at defining maritime boundaries and continental shelf claims in line with international law. Observers have pointed out that parts of the proposed zones potentially overlap with areas claimed by Taiwan.
Taiwanese officials have indicated that both Japan and the Philippines have provided assurances that any resultant agreements would not be legally binding on third parties and would adhere to established international legal principles. Taiwan’s government remains committed to engaging with both nations to protect its maritime interests, which include fishing rights and access to resources in the region. Additionally, authorities highlighted that their existing agreements with Japan and the Philippines will continue to be honored.
This development occurs against a backdrop of heightened regional tensions, particularly after China laid claim to waters east of Taiwan and conducted coast guard patrols in the area. Taiwan has dismissed these claims, maintaining its stance on sovereignty and maritime jurisdiction.
Philippine officials have clarified that formal negotiations have yet to commence and emphasized that predicting the possible implications of any future agreement on fishing rights or territorial claims would be premature at this stage.
