South Korea and Japan are considering a significant step in their defense relationship by discussing a military logistics support agreement. This was revealed by South Korean Defense Minister Ahn Gyu-back after he met with his Japanese counterpart, Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi, during a regional security forum in Singapore. The proposed deal, known as an acquisition and cross-servicing agreement, would allow the two nations to exchange and procure essential military supplies such as fuel, food, and ammunition during collaborative operations.
Ahn highlighted the sensitivity of the proposal, noting that it requires careful handling and public support in both countries before any concrete progress can be made. He acknowledged that Seoul plans to proceed with caution on this matter, given the historical tensions between South Korea and Japan. These tensions are rooted in Japan’s colonial rule over the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945, which has made South Korea wary of deepening military ties with Japan.
In addition to discussing the logistics agreement, Ahn and Koizumi agreed to explore the possibility of conducting a joint humanitarian search-and-rescue exercise planned for June. If this exercise takes place, it would be the first of its kind between the two nations in nearly ten years, signaling a potential thaw in their military relations. This move comes as both countries seek to strengthen their security collaboration amidst growing regional challenges.
