The potential enhancement of economic ties between Japan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) could bolster supply-chain resilience and energy security, while advancing the use of artificial intelligence across the region. This strategic move comes as both parties agreed to explore an expansion of their existing economic partnership agreement, aiming to address emerging global challenges.

During a meeting of economic ministers in Manila on September 20, Japan and ASEAN identified key areas for development, including the fortification of supply chains in response to growing global risks and the integration of AI technologies in economic activities. The dialogue also delved into strategies for maintaining stable energy supplies, particularly in light of disruptions affecting essential routes through the Middle East.

Japan reaffirmed its commitment to supporting ASEAN countries in enhancing their oil stockpiles, a step seen as crucial for strengthening regional energy security. Both parties emphasized the need for closer economic cooperation amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions and uncertainties in global trade, underscoring the importance of a unified approach to overcoming these challenges.

The Japan-ASEAN economic partnership agreement, which has been effective since 2008, has progressively expanded to encompass trade in services and investment. This collaboration has resulted in substantial economic interactions, with two-way merchandise trade reaching $245.4 billion in 2025 and Japanese investment in ASEAN totaling $9.5 billion.

As the exploration of an expanded partnership continues, the focus remains on adapting to the evolving economic landscape, ensuring that both Japan and ASEAN can effectively navigate and thrive in a rapidly changing global environment.
