Japanese semiconductor companies are increasingly making their mark in India as part of the country’s ambitious efforts to build a robust domestic chip manufacturing ecosystem. This strategic expansion was highlighted during Semicon India 2026, held in New Delhi, where over 30 Japanese firms participated alongside Indian industry representatives to discuss potential investments, technology partnerships, and supply chain collaborations.

India is positioning itself as a global hub for semiconductors, covering all aspects from chip materials to design and manufacturing. The Indian government is actively enhancing its domestic semiconductor capabilities and focusing on developing a skilled workforce. However, the country still faces a shortage of workers with specialized skills in this sector.

Several Japanese companies are already collaborating with Indian firms to address these challenges. Fujifilm is partnering with Tata Electronics to advance semiconductor materials, while Sumitomo Chemical is exploring cooperation on supply chain management for semiconductor materials. Additionally, Enomoto is anticipated to offer production technology support, thereby bolstering India’s technological capabilities.

Tokyo Electron has announced plans to open a training center in Gujarat by 2027, aimed at developing engineers skilled in semiconductor manufacturing equipment. This initiative is expected to contribute significantly to workforce development in India, addressing the current skills gap in the semiconductor industry.

Industry officials note that while India has a large pool of engineering talent, the expertise in specialized semiconductor skills is crucial for the country to establish a competitive edge in the global market. The involvement of Japanese companies is seen as a vital step towards technology transfer and the strengthening of India’s semiconductor supply chain.
