In an effort to bolster bilateral ties, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi convened with Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale in Tokyo, marking a significant moment in the two nations’ diplomatic relations. The meeting underscored a renewed commitment to collaboration, particularly in light of shifting foreign policy dynamics in the Pacific island nation under its new leadership.
Prime Minister Takaichi and Prime Minister Wale reached an agreement to enhance development cooperation, which includes a substantial 3 billion yen (around $18.3 million) in yen loans. They also emphasized the importance of fostering greater people-to-people exchanges. Takaichi expressed Japan’s intention to forge a “strong and prosperous cooperative relationship” with the Solomon Islands, rooted in mutual values such as freedom, democracy, the rule of law, and human rights. Wale, in turn, expressed gratitude for Japan’s support, noting the critical assistance needed by Pacific island nations grappling with various economic and development challenges.
This meeting gains significance against the backdrop of a major policy shift in the Solomon Islands. Back in 2019, the country altered its diplomatic allegiance from Taiwan to China, followed by a 2022 security agreement with Beijing. This pact permitted Chinese naval vessels to access Solomon Islands’ ports and allowed the presence of Chinese security personnel, stirring apprehension among regional allies about China’s expanding strategic influence in the Pacific.
Since his inauguration in May 2026, Prime Minister Wale has indicated a departure from previous policies, vowing to reassess the security arrangement with China. He has openly criticized China’s recent submarine-launched ballistic missile test in the Pacific and has prioritized fostering closer ties with nations like Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Japan, signaling a shift towards traditional allies.
For Japan, fortifying its relationship with the Solomon Islands aligns with its broader strategic objective of promoting a Free and Open Indo-Pacific, which seeks to enhance regional stability, security, and collaboration. As a token of goodwill, Takaichi presented Wale with a football from the Nara Prefectural Football Association, symbolizing the sport’s popularity in the Solomon Islands and Takaichi’s personal connection to Nara Prefecture.
