Iran Proposes Reopening Strait of Hormuz if U.S. Lifts Blockade, Eases Sanctions

Iran has proposed reopening the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz within a week, contingent upon the United States meeting several conditions. These conditions include lifting the naval blockade of Iranian ports, easing sanctions on Iranian oil exports, and maintaining a ceasefire that extends to Lebanon. The Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, stated that the timeline for reopening the strait would commence once Washington accepts the proposal.

The plan outlines that initial steps would take four to five days, with the waterway reopening on the sixth day and U.S.-Iran nuclear talks resuming on the seventh. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital corridor for global energy transport, and any disruption poses significant risks to international oil and gas markets. Iran has frequently leveraged control over this passage as a strategic tool amid ongoing conflicts.

The proposal was communicated to the United States through Qatar, a country that has been actively mediating between Tehran and Washington. This initiative follows previous diplomatic efforts that have not resulted in a lasting agreement. In parallel, Iran has been engaging diplomatically with Gulf nations, evidenced by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian’s meeting with Qatar’s prime minister and Araghchi’s discussions with Saudi officials during the U.N. General Assembly.

Despite these diplomatic overtures, internal disagreements persist within Iran regarding negotiations with the United States. Hard-line officials have expressed skepticism towards diplomatic solutions, advocating for continued resistance, whereas other Iranian officials favoring negotiations are pushing for a peaceful resolution.

There is, however, uncertainty about the scope of the proposed arrangements, particularly whether they would address the conflict involving Yemen’s Houthi forces and the security of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, another key international shipping route.
