The Premier League title race intensified on Wednesday as Manchester City were held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton & Hove Albion at the Etihad Stadium, allowing Arsenal to extend their lead at the top of the table. City have now drawn three consecutive league matches and sit on 43 points, five behind the Gunners who have 48 points ahead of their clash with Liverpool.
Erling Haaland gave the hosts the lead from the penalty spot four minutes before halftime, after Jeremy Doku was brought down by Diego Gomez inside the area. The decision was confirmed by VAR, and Haaland converted confidently to reach his 150th goal for Manchester City, ending a three-game scoring drought and taking his Premier League tally to 20 goals for the season.
City threatened to double their advantage early in the second half when Bernardo Silva pounced on a Brighton error, but his shot rebounded off the woodwork. The match saw tensions flare when goalkeepers Gianluigi Donnarumma and Maxim De Cuyper became involved in a heated exchange, with both players receiving yellow cards.
Brighton equalised in the 60th minute through Kaoru Mitoma, who received a pass from the flank and expertly guided a low shot into the far corner from the edge of the box. The goal completely changed the dynamics of the match, with Brighton growing in confidence and beginning to dictate proceedings.
The visitors dominated after equalising and came agonisingly close to securing all three points when Mitoma’s effort from a tight angle struck the post. In the dying minutes, Haaland had a clear opportunity to win the match for City, but Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen produced a magnificent save to deny him, leaving City facing serious questions about their ability to mount a sustained title challenge.
