Tokyo Stocks Dip Amid High Oil Prices and ASML’s Weak Earnings

by admin477351

Japanese stock markets closed lower on Wednesday, weighed down by high crude oil prices and underwhelming earnings from ASML Holding, a Dutch semiconductor equipment maker. The Nikkei 225 Stock Average dropped 33.23 points, or 0.05%, to settle at 67,744.29, while the broader Topix index declined by 13.89 points, or 0.34%, finishing at 4,096.78. Sectors such as banking, securities, and precision instruments were among the hardest hit.

Investor caution persisted as US West Texas Intermediate crude oil futures remained above $90 per barrel, reflecting concerns over energy supplies amid ongoing tensions in the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. These geopolitical factors added pressure to equities, prompting a cautious market environment.

Despite these challenges, some investors took the opportunity to buy major technology stocks following recent declines, which helped to mitigate the overall market losses. The Nikkei index had already experienced a significant drop, losing more than 2,900 points over four consecutive trading sessions leading up to Tuesday.

Market participants are also keeping a close watch on the upcoming release of US consumer price index data for September. This data could influence expectations regarding the Federal Reserve’s future monetary policy decisions, adding another layer of uncertainty to the market.

In currency trading, the US dollar was valued at approximately 158.34 yen in Tokyo. Japan’s benchmark 10-year government bond yield saw a slight decrease to 2.995% following stable demand at a five-year government bond auction.

The day’s trading began positively but reversed course after ASML’s quarterly earnings report failed to meet investor expectations, exacerbating concerns within the technology sector. This development contributed to the downward pressure on the market, underscoring the challenges faced by Japanese stocks in the current economic climate.
