Motegi described his conversation with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi as a short, informal exchange focused on bilateral relations, highlighting the importance of ongoing dialogue for maintaining regional peace. However, China has refuted claims that any meeting or planned contact occurred.
Motegi also confirmed a brief interaction with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, marking the first known diplomatic contact between Japan and Russia at this level since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. During their discussion, the two top diplomats addressed bilateral relations and regional issues, signifying a cautious step in diplomatic engagement between the nations.
Despite these renewed contacts, Japan remains steadfast in its support for Ukraine and its sanctions against Russia. The Japanese government has reiterated that these diplomatic engagements do not signal a shift in its international commitments or policies concerning the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
