Japan’s government has officially set the dates for an extraordinary session of the Diet, which will run from October 5 to December 12, focusing on significant economic and political measures. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is slated to address the session with a policy speech on the opening day, followed by a Q&A segment with lawmakers from both houses of parliament.

One of the critical issues on the agenda will be a proposal to temporarily reduce the consumption tax on food and beverages from 8% to 1% for a two-year period starting in April 2027. This legislation aims to alleviate the financial burden on consumers amid economic fluctuations.

Additionally, the session will deliberate on potential legislation to decrease the number of seats in the House of Representatives, a move likely intended to streamline governmental processes and reduce costs.

The government has expressed its intention to collaborate with opposition parties to garner support for these proposed measures, indicating a strategic push to advance its legislative priorities during the session.
