The Japanese Defense Ministry is set to introduce a new procurement system aimed at integrating cutting-edge technologies from startups into its defense equipment, Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi announced on Friday. This initiative seeks to enhance Japan’s defense capabilities by fostering innovation, particularly in areas such as drones and artificial intelligence.
The program is strategically designed to encourage startup involvement in the defense sector by providing upfront funding for technology development. The ministry is calling for proposals specifically for low-cost, mass-producible small attack drones and related equipment for the Ground Self-Defense Force and Maritime Self-Defense Force. A key focus will be on utilizing domestically produced components to bolster local industry.
In its first phase, the program will select several promising companies at the concept stage, gradually narrowing down candidates through prototype development and testing. This process aims to ensure that the most viable and innovative technologies are adopted into the defense system.
Beyond drones, the ministry is also interested in technologies that can improve warehouse management and reduce staffing needs, as well as equipment that minimizes aircraft noise and enhances working conditions for Air Self-Defense Force personnel.
Applications for the initial round of proposals will open on October 2. The ministry anticipates that this new procurement system will expedite the adoption of advanced technologies, ultimately strengthening Japan’s defense posture.
