Moscow – President Vladimir Putin is carefully crafting a narrative of absolute control, combining announcements of significant land gains in Ukraine with the establishment of firm red lines for Western powers.
The foundation of this narrative is territorial conquest. Putin stated that his forces have captured nearly 5,000 square kilometers in 2025, an achievement he uses to justify his claim that Russia holds the “complete strategic initiative.” This projects an image of an inevitable Russian victory.
Building on this foundation, Putin is drawing his red lines. He has warned the United States that supplying Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine would cross a critical threshold, triggering a “qualitatively new stage of escalation” and shattering diplomatic ties with Washington.
This narrative of control is, however, being disrupted by Ukraine. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s accusations of Russia using oil tankers for spying and sabotage introduce an element of chaos and unconventionality that challenges Putin’s portrayal of a well-ordered campaign.
Zelenskyy’s determination to work with allies to stop these alleged operations shows that the conflict remains dynamic and unpredictable, despite Putin’s efforts to project an image of total control.
